What You Need to Know

Although commonly referred to as "Kennel Cough", Bordetella is actually a broad term that encompasses many types of canine respiratory illnesses. The term kennel cough came about as the illness is extremely contagious and can be passed quickly to other dogs in any area where many dogs congregate, such as a kennel.  However, both the veterinary and dog boarding industries are working hard to take away this often misleading stigma associated with kennels.

Just a reminder...Canine Cough is not manufactured in a kennel, it is delivered there!

Bordetella is the equivalent of the human common cold or flu. Just as when you send your children to daycare or school they will often come home with some sort of illness due to the amount of other children they are around. 

Most dogs can fight it off through their own immune system response. Even though we require all dogs to have the Bordetella vaccine, it is very similar to the flu shot in that there are always new strains forming and the vaccine is not 100% effective. 

Bordetella LOVES humidity! So the spring and fall are often the times when the virus will flare up.

With an incubation period of 7-14 symptom free days and NO 100% EFFECTIVE VACCINE this airborne virus is a risk associated with taking your dog anywhere where other dogs go, such as off leash parks, walking trails, vet offices and dog daycare/boarding facilities. 

It can walk in with anyone and leave the facility before anyone ever hears the first cough! ​

That Is Why: Every Playpen guest is required to be vaccinated for Bordetella. We have strict cleaning/sanitizing protocols with professional grade cleaners. Our cleaning protocols have been reviewed and approved by Steeples Veterinary Clinic. We do everything humanly possible to avoid having the virus spread but due to how it is transmitted (airborne within fluid such as a sneeze, drool or a lick) it can be a daunting task and absolutely NO reflection on the cleanliness of our boarding facility!
